Unique roasted green tea from the Kogane Midori cultivar
The birth of a new tea cultivar:
About 30 years ago in an ordinary tea plantation in Shizuoka, one tea bush mutated, and its leaves, instead of lush green, turned bright gold. Sato Hiromitsu, the owner of the plantation, saw the unique chance and decided to cultivate more from the newfound golden leaf tree. He noticed that the more the leaves are exposed to the Sun, the brighter gold they turn. He named the new cultivar "Kogane Midori", "golden green", and cultivated that one little tea bush into an entire plantation. What we see now deep in the mountains of Shizuoka, an entire plantation shining in sunshine gold, is the result of his 30 years of special care and hard work.
The benefits of Kogane Midori:
Kogane Midori's leaves are not only rare and beautiful but also contain more amino acids than regular green tea cultivars. Unlike most Japanese green teas that go a maximum of 2-3 steeps, Kogane Midori Hōjicha is exceptionally lasting and can go up to 3-4.
Taste notes:
The heated leaf in the pot smells of coffee and cacao, with a toasted note that brings savory rice crackers to mind. After the first brew, the wet leaf is smoky and comforting, with tobacco, dried fruit, and dried fig.
The cup itself is simpler than the aroma, and that is part of its character: the fragrance is more complex than the taste. It is sweet and plain in a good way, with the savor of boiled brown rice and a clean, delicious finish. If you want a tea that can stand in for coffee with a roasted flavor similar in taste to a firm cup of coffee.
The second brew keeps that sweetness, with a lingering bitterness behind it. The spent leaf opens large in shape with a blonde hue.
We offer two other amazing teas from this special Kogane Midori cultivar: Sencha Kogane Midori and Kogane Midori Gabaroncha.

Having bought the Kogane Midori Sencha before, and enjoying the refreshing, slight roast feel, I decided to give this one a go! I was quite surprised as opening a tea bag and getting the first smell and feel for the aroma is one of my favorite parts of buying teas- this one was a pleasant surprise as I discovered pleasant almond skin and nutty notes (with a depth that reminded me of something near chocolate, even). I found the spent leaf aroma after the first hot brew to likewise be pleasing, and I plan to try various steeping bags with the remaining tea I have. I sometimes forget the vast, complex world of tea notes contained in Hojicha teas, and this one was a gentle reminder to return to Hojicha every once and a while.

We are sorry to hear about your experiences with this tea! Every time we tried we found it very flavorful and rich. The strong cocoa aroma is comforting. May we ask how you prepared the tea?
